Mwalim “Da Phunkee Professor” Peters (Wampanoag)

Mwalim “DaPhunkee Professor” Peters (Mashpee Wampanoag) is a multi-award-winning composer, musician, theater artist, writer, media producer, and educator whose works span the mediums of music,  theater, literature, film, television, and multimedia installations. Elder Mwalim began playing music at age 10; before turning 14, he performed at Carnegie Hall. By 16, he was one of the youngest session players in EMI history. Elder Mwalim is a three-time recipient of the New England Urban Music Awards for jazz. He is the keyboardist and a resident songwriter for the multi-Grammy-nominated soul-funk band, The GroovaLottos. Elder Mwalim is the head of production at Polyphonic Studios in Buzzards Bay. He is a tenured professor of English, Communications, and Black Studies at UMass Dartmouth.
